Excellent amount of information given so we knew exactly what to expect prior to the trip. Everything ran really smoothly and all staff were really pleasant and helpful. They handed out rain ponchos for the boat which came in useful as it did get wet! Would definitely recommend.

The process worked smoothly. 1.5h at the la union immigration office where they made photocopies of our passports and we had to fill out the nicaraguan immigration form. Then 2.5h on the boat. We got soaking wet and it was really shaky. However, this depends on the weather, it was really windy for us. Make sure to wear flipflops and use a drybag for essentials. They provided us with ponchos half way through. The luggage was stored in the boat so this does not get wet.
When arriving in Nicaragua, military searched our bags and we had to wait another 1-1.5h at the immigration office and then pay 15usd. The shuttle was already waiting for us and we drove 3h to Leon. Our shuttle didnt have AC and was really crammed, we did NOT have a good ride. However, we heard that the second shuttle leaving at the same time was fine, so it depends on luck. I give 4 stars as the process was smooth and no problems at all. But the boat ride and shuttle were really uncomfortable so we would not do it again.

I would definitely recommend doing this trip via gecko, as doing it independently would be difficult, especially the onward transportation in Nicaragua. The crew on the boat take good care to ensure nothing gets wet. You are given a poncho to wear and a plastic bag for your valuables, everything else is safely stowed and wrapped.
Things to note, don’t bother filling in the online form. Nobody asked for it, and everyone was charged the same $3 on top of the $10 for the tourist card. Also you will need to be prepared to wade through the water with your bags as the boat pulls up on the beach.
The minibus to Leon was comfortable and the driver was safe.

Got soaked! Recommend a raincoat and sit on right side, people sitting there got less wet.
