Is there an easier way to get from Leon to El Tunco? This shuttle and boat combo might just save you the hassle.
Shuttle plus boat from Leon to El Tunco beach is a shared shuttle bus and boat transport that connects western Nicaragua with the Pacific coast of El Salvador in a single coordinated journey. Departing from hotels and hostels in downtown Leon, this door-to-door service combines overland travel with a coastal boat crossing, offering a practical alternative to a fully land-based route.
The journey heads northwest through Chinandega and nearby coastal areas toward Potosí, where passengers board a boat for the maritime segment across the Gulf of Fonseca. After reaching El Salvador, the route continues by road toward La Libertad, with final drop-offs in El Tunco and Zonte beach. This multi-segment connection links several key coastal destinations, making it useful for travelers moving between surf towns and regional hubs.
Passengers travel in an air-conditioned shuttle and are provided with lifejackets for the boat portion. Conditions can be rustic, especially during boarding, and travelers should be prepared for a long travel day. Overall, it’s a structured and dependable shared transport option designed for efficient regional travel.

As advertised it was a good experience easy change overs but a long day but made it easy! Thank you.. the last shuttle driver was very fast and a bit eratic.

I thought the day went pretty smoothly. The first shuttle made a stop at a petrol station for us to get food/drinks and use the services, and another stop to make the photocopies as I wasn’t able to sort this out before ($1/C40 for 3 photocopies). The second shuttle from La Union also made a stop at a petrol station and took me right to my hostel in El Zonte. Overall, it was an easy journey (but heads up – you do get a bit wet on the boat!)

Na vseh treh točkah, od prevzema, do čolna in zadnjega transferja je bilo vse odlično. Kapitan in oba šoferja – super. Prijazni, s poudarkom na varnosti.

Pro: Pickup was on time. Transport without issue.
Con: At Potosi terminal for the boat, the wait was 2 hours. There was no communication what was happening and we were just waiting. Although this was more paperwork process by authority, an update would be appreciated. Upon reaching La Union, the process was smooth and we were quickly ushered to the next van. But we had not eaten lunch. This trip was from 7.30am until 6pm. A lunch break is needed. Should have organised and communicated to us better to make use the 2 hours wait for lunch instead.
